After nearly ten years, D. Gray-Man has returned to anime fans. Many have mixed feelings about the original series. As someone who has recently started rewatching it, the show is very much a product of its time. The animation is nothing spectacular and the characters, while mostly interesting, can still come off as very tropey. However, someone who absolutely loved the series was the original English voice of Allen Walker and assistant director, Todd Haberkorn. Only the first fifty-one episodes of season one were dubbed in English, which was a shame because it was clear that there was a lot of love behind this project.
Which is why it’s exciting to see that the entire original cast will be returning to be a part of D.Gray-Man HOLLOW.
The only real down side to this is the fact that there’s still fifty-one episodes that haven’t been dubbed yet, so fans like me will need to watch the second season in Japanese in order to catch up on everything that will be happening in this new season. However, I think catching up on the series is completely worth it. It’s even nostalgic to see the older show because I can see how far English voice acting and even anime has come over the past ten years.
I’m excited to see some of my favorite actors come back to these roles as well as the new talent that has been added to the cast. This will be a great tibute to the original production as well as something new for fans of the original series.
D.Gray-Man HOLLOW will premier on August 3 at 9:00pm EST as part of the Summer 2016 Dubbletalk line up. Check out Funimation’s website for more news on simuldubs as well was new show announcements.
